Some believe that LED might be harmful but actually LED lighting is healthier for the human eye than conventional light sources, which is caused by the emission of a lot of different colors in the LED; it has a wider spectral power distribution (SPD). With LEDs, there is a greater ability to tailor lighting systems to meet both visual and non-visual needs. This is presenting many new opportunities, and the right LED lighting solution can create a healthier working and living environment. Light plays a significant role in maintaining daily physiological function. When people mention LEDs as light sources, they are often associated with light and health for several reasons. Color often comes into mind when discussing LED and lighting. The color is a human perception constructed from the combination of the SPD of the light source, the illuminated material’s spectral reflectance and the nature of the human eye. As LED has a wide SPD, it is perceived as a good and healthy light source. The high correlated color temperature (CCT) on 5000K in LEDs, which creates a cold light, is also perceived as positive, as lamps with higher CCT values produce greater brightness perception than lamps with lower CCT of the same luminance. Also, LEDs have high color rendering properties, which makes the surface colors appear more saturated.
Nowadays, we spend a lot of time indoors, which makes it important that we are able to control the luminous environment, as it can promote health and avoid harm. LEDs can be customized to the needs, as they offer superior flexibility in terms of spectrum, intensity, directionality, and controllability compared to most traditional light sources. All these factors are important in designing the LEDs for an indoor environment. When LEDs are used indoor, it is possible to create a “natural” environment that is very much like natural daylight. The fact that LEDs offer a positive association with daylight may, in fact, help to improve mood and motivation and thus increase productivity, retail sales and generally improve the working and living environment.
