What is the Nordic Swan Ecolabel?
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is Denmark’s and the Nordic region’s official environmental label and one of the world’s strictest environmental certifications – you probably know their logo: a white swan on a round green-striped background. Perhaps some of your products at home have this label? Your baking paper, shampoo, or dish soap. Not quite sure what this stands for or why it’s a good idea to use it as an important benchmark? By choosing Swan-labelled products and services, you are helping to take care of the environment.
After correspondence with Ecolabelling Denmark, it was determined that it is unfortunately no longer possible for light sources/lamps to obtain this certification. It has so far been possible in their previous version of criteria for furniture and fixtures, but light sources have been removed from the current version. Lumega therefore has no Nordic Swan Eco-labelled products – but that has not prevented us from unraveling the journey of our products, so that we could theoretically achieve this certification.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel looks at the product’s entire journey:
Hypothetically speaking, for a light source to achieve the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the total environmental impact from production to consumption is looked at. The entire journey of the light source is scrutinized, and attention is focused on the places on the journey where any environmental problems arise. The journey starts with the product being designed, then raw materials are procured and then the product itself is produced. During the production of the product, a certain amount of energy and sometimes chemicals are used. After production, the product must be packaged and shipped to a warehouse, after which the consumer can purchase the product.
However, the journey does not end here – when the consumer wants renewal, the product is either passed on for reuse, recycling or thrown away. This entire journey burdens the environment and leaves an imprint along the way on both the climate, people, and the environment. The extent of the imprint depends on which raw materials have been used, how the manufacturing of the product has progressed, as well as how both people and nature are exposed to the product during use – and in Lumega’s case, when the light source is in use by the consumer. It is not enough to simply identify the environmental problems, they must also be solved to protect both people, the environment, and the earth’s resources. There are strict requirements during the product’s journey that must be met before the Nordic Swan Ecolabel can be achieved. When you choose a Nordic Swan Eco-labelled product, you don’t have to familiarize yourself with the journey from production to consumption. As a consumer, you can be sure that if a product has the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, you are guaranteed that the product is better for the environment and better for you.
If it were possible for Lumega to apply for a license for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, then Environmental Labeling Denmark would review all the documentation we have collected about the product’s journey. Here they wanted to check Lumega and see if we met all the requirements in the ecolabel criteria. Inspection visits would also be made to our company to assess whether the product, the production conditions and the work process are in accordance with the submitted documents. This control also helps to ensure that we as a company also comply with the quality management system in daily operations. After that, there would be ongoing random checks, also known as follow-up checks – simply to ensure that we as a company and our products live up to the strict environmental requirements.
We wish it would be possible to obtain the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for products like ours, light sources. To be granted this certification and ongoing checks, would ensure that you, as a consumer, had no doubt that Lumega takes care of the climate, the environment – that Lumega takes care of you.
